Barnsley Building Society

The Society was first established in 1853 with the aim of 'enabling people to purchase their own residences' and offered savings accounts to encourage profitable investing amongst its members. In 1873 there were 3 branches and the Society had assets of £679, by 1953 there were 15 branches and assets of £5million. The Barnsley Building Society merged with the Yorkshire Building Society on 31st December 2008. The brand name remains in use and there are currently 8 branches.

There are a range of savings, investment, insurance and mortgage products available and many can be managed on line. The Society concentrates upon providing residential mortgages for new and existing customers. You can choose to apply for a fixed rate or tracker mortgage over 2 or 5 years and may be able to transfer the product with you if you decide to move to a new home before the end of the offer period, ask your mortgage advisor about this. Early repayment charges will apply if you pay off your mortgage loan before the end of the offer period.

You may be able to borrow up to 85% of your property's value but if you are able to provide more than 25% deposit you will benefit from paying a lower rate of interest. The minimum loan amount is £25,001.

 

Barnsley Building Society Mortgage Products

First Time Buyer mortgages: You can choose from the range of mortgages on offer to all new customers, there are no special deals available but some products may not incur valuation or other fees. Check each individual product to see if this applies.

Fixed Rate mortgages: These products offer the security of knowing exactly how much your monthly payments will be for the agreed period. You can choose from a 2 or 5 year fixed rate deal, at the end of that time you will switch to the Society's Standard Variable Rate.

Tracker mortgages: Your monthly repayment will be affected by any changes in the Standard Variable Rate and may rise or fall accordingly. Barnsley Building Society offers a 2 year tracker that guarantees a set percentage above the Bank of England Base Rate for the duration of the deal period.
